Pets will be available for free this Sunday at the Pennsylvania SPCA.
The shelter at 848 S. Prince St. will waive adoption fees for one day only, thanks to a grant from the nonprofit Bissell Pet Foundation.
PSPCA spokeswoman Gillian Kocher said there will likely be about 20 dogs and a similar number of cats available for adoption at the Lancaster shelter on Sunday.
The “Empty the Shelters” event will also eliminate fees for the day PSPCA shelters in Philadelphia. Event organizers hope to see more than 100 pets adopted from PSPCA facilities.
The foundation has helped rehome more than 9,000 cats and dogs through similar events nationwide over the past 17 months.
“PSPCA will follow its standard application procedures to ensure pets go to the right homes,” foundation founder Cathy Bissell said in a statement.
People who adopt a pet during the event will still be responsible for licensing fees.
Anyone hoping to adopt should bring a photo ID, proof of address and proof of vaccinations for pets already in the home.
